Learning Beyond the Classroom
Critical Thinking Activities
Campers engaged in a range of extracurricular activities designed to enhance their critical thinking and soft skills. These are largely organized by counselors under the supervision of the Camp xSEL team. Activities included critical thinking laboratories, debates, quiz competitions, and a talent show. The critical thinking activities included The Human Knot, Bridge Building, Egg Drop, and Four Corners.
In addition to these activities, counselors are tasked with organizing debate nights and quiz competitions. Quizzes created a fun and competitive way for students to review their notes from classes and learn about current events while encouraging teamwork and collaboration. These activities also allowed the Camp xSEL management team to observe the unique strengths of different students.
Health Workshops
Workshops on sexual and reproductive health, mental health, and general health were organized for 11th and 12th graders. These workshops were facilitated by a member of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Innovation, along with other experts in the respective fields.
Field Trips
Field trips were organized by the respective camp management teams to provide opportunities for learning beyond the classroom, adding historical, civic, and geographical exposure for the campers. Campers toured labs, wildlife sanctuaries, and historical sites in Montserrado and Maryland counties.
Sports
Recognizing that sports are an integral part of school life in Liberia, the camp scheduled weekly evening sports activities, including football, basketball, kickball, jump rope, hopscotch, and the popular Liberian game Lappa.
